Come Visit Square City at SPX 2012

For the second year in a row, the comic creators at Square City Comics will have a booth at the Small Press Expo (SPX). We will be sharing the space with our West Coast affiliate, and Manga superstars, "Wayward Studios." Please come out on September 15th and 16th to meet the group, share your portfolio, and pick up a copy of the still-hot-off-the-presses Square City Comics Anthology Vol. 1, featuring the art and writing of our entire lineup of creators!

This is truly a must see event! It's the only time we will be at SPX until next year's SPX (presumably). Nowhere else on this particular weekend will you be able to find all the creative minds at Square City in one place at the same time! So come out and see us!

And be sure to RSVP at our shiny, new SCC Meetup Page!

SCC Draw Off - "Venom"

After a very productive meeting on June 23rd, we had yet another draw off of epic proportions as a sort of "closing ceremonies" ritual. The honor of choosing the topic fell to Scott, for his impressively gritty "Rorcat" drawing from the previous meeting. This time, the topic of choice was none other than the slime-slobbering, brain-eating, Spider-man-hating symbiote known as "Venom". Aaaaannd here are the results!:

^ a frighteningly good submission by Scott

^ by Emily (with strategic use of an eagle to conceal his feet)

^ A solid drawing for not knowing who Venom was
^ My preccccioouuusss....

^ by Mark (attempt #1)
^ by Mark (final submission

^ Venom just wants to be accepted for who he is!!

^ WINNER!: by Brian (me!)
As the gold goes to....the Venom with the largest neck muscles (mine!).

On a side note; Gabby Douglas vs. Venom on the gymnastics floor routine. Who would win? Bear in mind that while Gabby does have years of training and experience under her belt, Venom possesses a certain graceful allure that even most world-class athletes would find difficult to compete with.

So I saw. . .

Total Recall

And it was good. Well it was pretty good. At least Kate Beckinsale was good. She basically owned Total Recall. Kate, and some pretty spectacular special effects, is why you should see this movie.

There was also some guy name Colin Farell in it. He was. . .hmmh. . . OK. You could say his performance was on par with Arnie's in the original Total Recall. You know I'm not sure why I put that link in there. It's not like Amazon is going to pay us any money if you click on it and actually buy the DVD. It's late as I write this (1:49am to be exact) and it just seemed like the "right" thing to do. By that I mean I see a lot of other blogs with links to AMZN and so I thought I should do that too. But I digress, let me say it clearly wasn't Colin's finest hour. Or should I say 'finest run time of 2hr 1min'? He was serviceable though.

SO we have the good (Kate), the OK (Colin) and then there's the bad. Sorry Jessica, but that's you. I didn't think you were paying attention to your acting coaches on 7th Heaven and you certainly haven't improved much since then. (Watch Kate in 2002's Laurel Canyon after you see Total Recall and try to tell me the lady can't act.) But I'm not a critic. I'm just a bloke who paid $12 to see a movie. I'm not here to tell you how stale JB's performance was. Or how unimpressed I was with every minute of her screen time. Or that I actually cringed as I watched her plead (over-dramatically) at Colin's not-yet-dead-but-maybe-he-is-dead-but-the-audience-knows-hes-not-dead body near the end. Sorry JB, but I blame you for the suspension of my suspension of disbelief.
Well, at least we'll always have Summer Catch.. .

(To be honest I'd rather watch three of the four Underworld movies any day of the week. Kate in a shiny black pleather body suit trumps all.;-)

Note to Self: Delete Photo References

I love photo references. I use them all the time. But sometimes, the stalwart old Google Image search just won't do. And when almighty Google fails to turn up decent results for, "guy getting hit in the face," I am forced to improvise. Usually this means utilizing a mirror, a camera phone, and a lack of shame.

This is all fine and good, and these panels are typically better than the ones where I rely on guesswork and, you know, artistic intuition. My problem stems from the fact that I always forget to delete these references off my phone when I am done using them. Invariably, when I get back from some vacation and people ask to see my photos, interspersed with pictures of College Fjord, Glacier Bay, and Denali national park, without fail there's some picture of me, holding a stuffed animal like a small child, or balancing on one leg trying to mimic the Superman pose.
Granted, these are far from the worst images someone has ever unwittingly stumbled upon whilst looking through someone's camera phone pictures. Even so, I'm getting tired of explaining pictures like this to my friends and colleagues:

Sigh. At least I was wearing a shirt in that one.

Happy Friday, and keep drawing, everyone!

SCC Draw Off - "Rorschach As A Cat"

At long last, here it is; the final product of our SSC Draw Off several months ago. Since I happened to be the only one who completed the "Zatana/polar bear/steering wheel/briefcase" assignment that month (to be posted soon), I was bequeathed the honor of picking the topic of that meeting's Draw Off. The first topic I thought off the top of my head?: "Rorschach as a cat...doing something gritty." Needless to say, we had some great submissions. However, Scott's (the final picture here) was given the legendary status of WINNER. And thus Rorcat was born:
